Kaili Kleemeier studied to become English teacher, but while her degree prepared her to teach her path would be somewhat different. She started working at Skype in a support role and after short few months got moved to the payments world. Her job and challenge was to make Skype's payments work, which she did.
After her successes in payments she moved to lead all Skype operations teams globally. In this role she found that working with remote teams was a challenge in many ways – cultural differences, language differences, sharing information across locations, the list was endless. During meetings and discussions her teams had to put everything on steroids by explaining things faster, solving problems faster all while being extremely transparent. Cross boundary collaboration was a subject that Kaili and her team became very interested in and she began to research how to collaborate more effectively.
“We found a number of tools that would solve a few of our problems, but nothing supported the entire process of collaboration that we needed. So we decided to put what we learned into use and create a solution.”
Their research led to the development of Deekit, a virtual whiteboard that helps remote teams collaborate anywhere and in real time. The software and iOS app offers an unlimited canvas to create content on any device, wherever teams are located, and works as a natural extension to traditional audio and video calls.
Prior to the official launch the team spent years researching to understand when teams needed to collaborate and what would be the best ways to interact in those particular moments. They also dug deeper into psychology to understand human behavior and how Deekit could support the brainstorming of new ideas or solve complex challenges with the best results.
Enter Draper University
Kaili is huge fan of Tim Draper and the way he sees the world and startups. She heard quite a lot about the Draper University program and how much it differs from regular classes. For her it simply sounded like the perfect way to gain much needed knowledge and practice and move Deekit to the next level.
“Today I am so happy to have gone through the program and even happier that Deekit was just accepted into the fall 2015 Class for Techstars. Much of what they teach at Draper is what we believe as a team and doing things that we are passionate about. That same feeling is evident during the entire program at Draper.”
One of the key lessons at Draper is about openness and transparency, which is how the team at Deekit works. They also have a number of other beliefs that map back to what students learn during the program.
“It was amazing for me to participate in a program that shares many of the same philosophies that I try to live my life by. It made working the program much easier and very enjoyable.”
Some of Deekit’s (and Draper’s) philosophies include:
● Life is about the people you meet and the things you create together.
● Life is about time, how and with whom you spend it is entirely up to you.
● If you don't like something, change it. If you don't like your job, quit and find
a new one.
● If you see a problem, fix it.
● Allow yourself the freedom to express yourself, your ideas, your thoughts.
● Open your mind to see things from new angles.
● Create the things you love with people you love and do it with passion.
● You are a talent, and the stage is as wide as your mind and heart.
Deekit has officially launched their iOS app in the App store and ready for downloads and more users. Download and check out the app today.
