From Wall Street To Silicon Valley – Disrupting Medical Cannabis
After graduating summa cum laude with a B.A. in finance from the University of Missouri, David Kram spent over two years advising technology companies on M&A, IPO and public equity transactions, private capital financing and strategic partnerships and divestitures. Following a stint on Wall Street and while still young and able to take on risk, he decided to enter the startup world. He teamed up with a cofounder and together they built a social networking startup.
Then things really changed... During this time period David’s brother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma and was desperately seeking relief from the severe pain caused by his cancer. After doing some research, David discovered that medical cannabis had been shown to greatly aid in the treatment of Lymphoma, among many other cancers, diseases and ailments. David began studying the medical marijuana market landscape, legislation, competitive dynamic and market size and realized that the opportunity was incredibly massive and had yet to be disrupted. He also found that the process patients had to endure to get the medicine they needed to relieve pain was time consuming, inconvenient, indiscreet and often times unnecessarily confusing.
“My brother’s illness really hit home. I made it my mission to provide patients, no matter their location, with convenient access to the medicines they need to relieve their pain each and every day.”
David truly believed that medical cannabis patients deserve convenient and fast access to their medicine. Unable to find a solution in the market to adequately solve the issues faced by so many, he decided to build it himself.
Relieve is an ondemand medical marijuana marketplace connecting medical marijuana patients with dispensaries. The company is revolutionizing the medical cannabis industry by providing an easy, convenient, professional and completely discreet cannabis delivery marketplace. Relieve leverages mobile and locationbased technologies to provide a unique solution that allows cannabis dispensaries to increase customer base and sales beyond brickandmortar locations by providing a new means of distribution.
Enter Draper University and The Draper Network
For the last five months David has been building Relieve’s technology and infrastructure. He chose to attend Draper University because he wanted to be mentored by one of the most wellknown and wellrespected venture capitalists in the valley: Tim Draper. David also wanted an immersive program that would allow him to network with likeminded entrepreneurs and gain access to the resources that were needed to launch Relieve.
“The program was an amazing opportunity to receive mentorship, access to investors and investment capital and forge friendships with entrepreneurs from (literally) all over the world! I was mentored by amazing entrepreneurs and investors, developed close relationships with 29 other entrepreneurs that shared the same passion and ambition to change the world, and had access to resources within the Draper ecosystem that proved to be integral to the journey of building my startup and getting it ready for launch.”
While David believed that his university experience was an important one he feels that traditional programs don’t allow the students to immerse themselves in the curriculum. In the Draper program, you are thrown into a livein immersive ‘entrepreneurial bootcamp’ that allows you to experience for yourself the many challenges and obstacles that entrepreneurs face as they build their companies.
Upon entering Draper University, David only had mockups for his product. Now he has an actual product that is ready for public launch. In addition, members of the Draper network have helped him successfully ink a number of strategic partnerships that will allow David to bring his solution to market and provide medical marijuana patients with the easiest and most convenient way to receive their medicine.
“My next steps include closing my seed round of funding, as well as the public launch of my business in San Francisco, CA. I owe a lot of this to Draper University. It was an incredibly valuable experience, and one that I greatly benefited from. If you are serious about becoming an entrepreneur and changing the world, this program is for you! From the amazing resources you have access to through the Draper ecosystem, to the awesome staff and alumni mentors, to the amazing entrepreneurs you will meet during your program, and finally having a chance to pitch Tim Draper and many other investors it’s an experience that is truly life changing!”
